Conventions of an Opening Title

Expectations:

  • The cast and crew
  • People who have worked on the film
  • The film’s name

What is the purpose in titles of a film opening?

  • Gives a small introduction to the audience
  • Hints at the genre of the film
  • Gives credit to those who have worked on it
  • Sets the scene for the film
  • Foreshadow a character’s personality
  • People who are within the production team
  • Artistic way of setting the tone
  • Acknowledge the work of the institution, case and crew on a product
  • Shown at the beginning and show the most important members of the production
  • Now usually shown as text superimposed on a black screen or static pictures, or sometimes on top of action in the show.
  • May or may not be accompanying music. Where opening titles are built into a separate sequence of their own, the correct term is title sequence.
